CBD and Chiropractic Care

According to Chiropractic Economics, "The popularity of CBD oil supplements has skyrocketed over the last two years, and this year CBD debuted on the 22nd Chiropractic Economics Salary & Expense Survey.

In its first year included in the magazine survey, doctors of chiropractic across the U.S. reported 26% of offices and clinics now sell CBD products. Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, comes from the hemp plant which contains only trace amounts of THC and will not get product users “high” like its cousin marijuana."

While it has yet to receive U.S. Food & Drug Administration approval, consumers are flocking to CBD for touted benefits including pain relief, treating depression and anxiety, alleviating cancer symptoms, dealing with symptoms from common neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, and more.

“CBD is a fast-moving gold rush since the passing of the Farm Bill in the U.S. late last year,” says Richard Vach, editor-in-chief of Chiropractic Economics magazine. “It’s popularity in chiropractor offices is mirroring that of the public, but not all CBD products are equal. Types of CBD oils, potencies, and sourcing issues all need to be considered. Offices of doctors of chiropractic selling CBD products are best-prepared to answer patient questions and steer them towards high-quality products that are not available over the counter.”

CBD QUALITY AND RELIABILITY

Understanding what CBD is and how it works is only half the battle. From there, finding a consistently reliable, quality CBD product becomes paramount for CBD pain relief. CBD oil quality indicators include:

  • Organically-grown Hemp – Only buy CBD products from manufacturers who are committed to organic growing practices and whose farmers have a proven knowledge base and clear understanding of organic farming.

  • U.S. Grown – Unfortunately, some CBD products originate from hemp plants grown overseas used to clean toxins from contaminated soil. Since hemp is a highly-effective bioaccumulator, it has become standard practice to use it for this purpose in some countries. While cleaning the earth is a great thing, making topicals or ingestibles from contaminated hemp plants is a sketchy, for-profit practice. Companies that sell such products should be avoided at all cost. Know where the plants that made your products come from.

  • Full-plant / Full-spectrum – “Full-spectrum” CBD utilizes whole-plant cannabinoid compounds rather than extracting any one specific molecule, cannabinoid, or compound. These compounds work together to achieve a higher level of effectiveness than any one of them alone.

  • Third-party Testimonials – Find out what others are saying about a given CBD oil company and its products from online reviews or other sources. How are people responding to it? What difference is it making for them?

CBD and Integrative Medicine

It feels like no matter where you look, CBD is there — from coffee beans and bath bombs to dog treats and doctors offices. This cannabinoid also plays an interesting role in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has sparked many diverse conversations in acupuncture offices.

Scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s when they were trying to understand how THC affects the body. While conducting research,  they found a complex network of cannabinoid receptors (CBr) in cells within the central and peripheral nervous system. (3)

Here’s a breakdown of these receptors, CB1 and CB2: (4)

  • CB1: This receptor is located in the brain, central nervous system, lungs, liver, kidneys, and reproductive organs. These are the receptors that interact with THC to cause someone to experience a psychoactive high

  • CB2. The cannabinoid receptor type 2 is found throughout the immune system and related organs, such as tissues of the spleen. CB2 stimulates a response that fights inflammation to help reduce pain and tissue damage

When placed side-by-side, there are some interesting connections between acupuncture and CBD use. Like CBD, acupuncture appears to stimulate the body in order to regulate and optimize major body systems, including the ECS.

The research is scarce, but some experts say that when CBD and acupuncture are used in combination, the

endocannabinoid system gets a one-two punch of positive stimulation, boosting beneficial health outcomes even more.
